A major part of Field Notes culture is its series of Quarterly Editions. New limited releases explore different papers, printing techniques, colors, binding methods and themes throughout the year. Many disappear once their production run is gone, which has created an enthusiastic worldwide community of Field Notes collectors.
Some editions celebrate American landscapes and wildlife; others explore typography, printing history, maps, agriculture or unusual materials. Field Notes has always had a practical, hardworking character. These are small notebooks for people who actually use their notebooks: designers, makers, craftspeople, engineers, photographers, travelers, gardeners, mechanics, architects and anyone who regularly needs to write something down before it disappears.
Some editions are built specifically for demanding environments. Expedition uses waterproof and tear-resistant synthetic pages, while other releases experiment with heavier covers and papers suitable for workshops, field work, travel and outdoor use.
Are Field Notes Fountain Pen Friendly?
Field Notes should not primarily be considered a fountain-pen notebook. Paper varies from edition to edition, and results depend heavily on ink, nib size and writing style. Many standard editions can work reasonably well with fine or medium fountain pen nibs, but feathering or bleed-through may occur with wetter combinations.
For everyday Field Notes use, we especially recommend ballpoint pens, rollerballs, mechanical pencils, pencils and fine-tip pens. They suit the quick, practical character of these notebooks perfectly. The waterproof Expedition edition, in particular, is not suitable for fountain pens.
